I don't think so.  I have used Apple and Toshiba drives with no problems.  I have used AmiCDFS and the OS3.1 and OS3.9 CD FileSystems.

If you are having problems chip the cables and termination (Terminate only at the ends).  Some A3000s have a bug that keeps them from providing terminator power, so you may want to jumper a device or two to supply it if possible.

You may need to upgrade your SCSI chip if it is a real old one.  Unfortunatly I forget how to tell which chip you have.
