Best KS 1.3 compatible text editor ?
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:20:31 PM »
Hello,

Could somebody recommend to me a free or shareware Kickstart 1.3 compatible and user-friendly text editor ?  I really need something between the heavy original Notepad and all the editors that require KS 2.0.

Thanks for any advice !

MicroEmacs?

Well, maybe when all my Amiga mouses have passed away...

you can probably track down Textcraft Plus rather inexpensively

I would prefer something lighter than a true word processor, but failing that I will use a word processor.  Talking of which, it seems to me that there are some new copies of Texcraft inside an Amiga lot I bought recently...

If you can locate a copy of LPDwriter, that will satisfy your needs.

I saw your post on another topic about word processors.

The Dice C editor is called DME (for Dillan's Micro Emacs) it works on Kickstart 1.3

This may be my solution.

Thank you again !

It appears that DME is not menu-driven, so it is not user-friendly enough to me.  However I have just found "TxEd Plus" (by MicroSmiths, 1988), which is both light and menu-driven, quite convenient for me.

I haven't found any old enough version of CygnusED yet.  I have just tested XDME, but although installed following the docs, it gives an error message ("Can't open version 0 of utility.library" - which is not in the package) then triggers a software failure.  So I will stick to TxEd at the moment !

I like AZ. Should be on Aminet.

It is on Aminet : http://aminet.net/text/edit/AZ154.lzh.  I have just tried it on WinUAE, but whether I run it from the CLI or the WB, nothing happens...

In my search of a KS 1.3 compatible user-friendly text editor, I have also found "Article Editor" in the "Professional Page 3" package, which has advantages over CygnusEd and TxEd.

Hi,

Thank you guys for your help.

Try "AmokED" a (X)DME reinplementation in Oberon.Or UEdit Atleast older version ran just fine on my bare 1.3 Amiga500.

AmokED wants KS 2 ...

UEdit does work under KS 1.3.  I find it a bit unclear and not very handy, but at least it is public domain.

I used to use CygnusED under 1.3 if I remember correctly.

Older versions do work on 1.3, but they haven't been released under public domain, have they ?

The TTx 1.03 version will certainly run under 1.3, and maybe version 2, which is on and maybe Aminet.

Turbotext 2 won't work under KS 1.3, and I haven't any older version.

If you can find one of these disks, or another source, then you could try this one.

I will investigate, thanks.

In the meantime I will stick to "Article Editor" from Professional Page 3, which is clean and handy.
