I tell people I'm deaf and that's the end of the conversation. They get uncomfortable and walk away to find someone else to talk to.

So do you use BSL or Macaton or does Oz have it's own sign language system?

Funny and true story, I once tried learning sign language however after two lessons the teacher told me that due to my short, stubby fingers it was like I was speaking with a lisp.

Who have I met? Karlos, Gadgetmaster, Ryu, Rockape, FluffyMcdeath, nicholas, Andy, RobertB and a whole bunch of others.

Yes, curry night... It is my shout I know...

Man I'd completely forgot that Ryu crashed at mine, seems like a lifetime ago :D

We use Auslan and Australian Sign English here, but I don't know anyone else who signs apart from my parents who live on the other side of the continent.

Interesting. I'd be curious to see what the differences are between the above two and BSL.

I've met fellow internerds from other forums there, but again the same thing happened that always happens, they got all weirded out and walked off.

Ah, see this is where I think you might be going wrong, a lot of nerds have pretty piss poor social skills themselves. That and most people as assholes (yes, the irony in this statement doesn't elude me).

It's not just being deaf that makes me weird and antisocial though. Plenty of deaf people are outgoing and seem to have no problems making friends, I'm just an oddball.

Given the reaction to your previous comment, I'd say you've a few friends on this site.

On the bright side, you have deafness to account for difficulties with your speech, I only have the excuse of being born in Plymouth ;)

FYI, Makaton is a sigh support system for people with difficulties understanding or using verbal language. It's not capable of replacing language due to the fact that it only really contains nouns, verbs and adjectives. So, you can sign "big yellow cup" or "more" to help a child to understand (or help themselves to express their needs) but you can't express more complex semantic or syntactic language.

I didn't realise it had that limitation, then again my only exposure to Makaton was with dealing with a friends autistic kids.

I think this thread highlights the real need for some curry enriched get-together goodness...

Yeah. Bigtime.

Shame that the usual suspects don't do international kidnappings really. Still, when I win the lottery ;)
