Anyone using gnomeshell ?

Just installed this and its pretty nice now that I've gotten the hang of it.
Not really much customization yet, but its pretty stable at least. Can't wait for it to be finished.

Will have to mess with it for another week or two before I decide if I'll stick with Gnome or switch to this for good.

Hmm, had never heard of it, but looking at the screenshots it's almost like they took the netbook remix frontend and merged it into gnome. I imagine it'd scale down quite nicely for a netbook too!

Too bad it runs like a total snail on netbooks, even with all hardware bling available.

So a lot like gnome then.

Netbooks are still pretty popular around here with the kids.

Tbh kolla is overstating things. The form factor is here to stay most likely.

But the market is pretty much saturated at this point and it has been for a while.

I doubt you'll see any real innovation now, unfortunately.

My only complaint is the screen resolution on the majority of them, 600 pixels high is a pain.  The 1.6ghz Atoms are more than fast enough for me.  I still carry one around as a "just in case" machine, way lighter than a cheap laptop, and I'd care much less if it got run over by a truck as opposed to a decent laptop costing 2-3 times what the netbook cost.

600 pixels high? You're lucky! Some of us only have 480 and are grateful!

I tend to use my 701 as a satellite system - it's always out and about with me, as you say, if it breaks it's not the end of the world.

but I did try the beta of Jolicloud!

Tbh I've only tried the openbox, enlightenment, netbook remix and the gui that was on the vendor supplied distro.

Right now I'm using openbox on crunchbang.

I'm not overstating things.
When the netbooks came, they were indeed tiny and cheap. Today they are just as big and bulky as mid-90ies laptops, and the price has gone up as well.

Where the hell have you been looking for netbooks? Seriously, I've owned mid 90's laptops. Even the bulkiest netbooks currently on the market don't come close.

Now the price does annoy me. There is nothing, and I do mean nothing that a netbook available for sale today offers in terms of functionality that the £200 AcerA1 didn't have, and certainly nothing to justify £150 more on the price tag.

The entire thing pisses me off, since I actually like and very much prefer the sub 9" variant of the eeepc 900-series. Just my luck that when something comes along that I actually like, it also vanishes almost immidiately.

Can't argue with you there, I had heard rumours that Asus were planning on bringing the 900 series back, but I've not seen anything to confirm that.
