Amiga on track again
2004-01-27 10:35
This springs launch of Amiga OS4 is supposed to give a new beginning to this classic platform.
That's the hope of Andreas Loong anyway, chairman/spokesperson for Amiga Computer Group.
By: Joel Åsblom
Last year Amiga supporters/users were left waiting in wain for the new operatingsystem Amiga Os4, but now a betaversion is in place and when Amiga Computer Group Göteborg (ACG) in april is having their annual fair the new version is hopefully finished.
Andreas Loong has already started looking on the betaversion and thinks there are many improvements.
- An important issue as that the entire operatingsystem is "lifted" from Motorolas 68k-platform to powerPCs c-code and the modernisation of the code, the added api's for things like games, he says.
He even notes that Amiga OS4 has had several improvements to the filesystem, f.ex. a tool for restoration of the system in case of crashes.
- Another cute thing is that if you f.ex. are using a game, the game itself can tell the system that you are busy and dont want to be disturbed by chat-messages etc.
An active union/group:
Andreas Loong tells that the union/group ACG Göteborg were started in august 2002 and has since become the most active Amiga-group/union in Sweden.
Their first Amiga fair AmiGBG 2002 had 450 participants, a number that should be higher when theirs hopefully a new OS to show.
Omongst the companies which sells Amigas in Sweden is notably GGS-Data in Göteborg which charges 11 785 SEK including VAT for an Amigaone.
The computers are delivered with an installation-CD for Debian -Linux, but the customers are going to get OS4 for free as soon as the product is finished.
