A590 Power
« on: December 02, 2003, 01:22:35 PM »
Ok, I just aquired an amiga 500 and an a590.

The problem is I don't have a power supply for the a590. Can an AT PS be rigged up? Do the 4 connectors for power on the unit use +5 -5 -12 +12? If so, what order are they in? Thanks.

Thanks heaps guys. Those links you both gave help me heaps. It looks like I'll be able to rig something up after all and use the a590. :)

I also found after I opened mine up yesterday when I got it, (I always like pulling new stuff apart, :) ), that I found it had amnesia. I suspect that the RAM from some old trident 1meg isa video cards will fit. They seem the same size physically and part numbers pretty much match too. Anyone confirm this?

Oh Skippy, that link you gave for the disk downloads, only the first install disk was on their site. I even went to the list of files themselves http://www.amigarealm.com/amiga/amios/downloads/hdc/ and the 2nd one (ram test disk) isn't there at all. Shouldn't really matter, I just wanted to let you know.

One more question though, what is the largest size scsi drive it can take just incase the 20meg XT drive that is currently in it doesn't work? Thanks.

Ok thanks. :) It's all good now.

By the looks of it, I should be able to use up to 4gig scsi drive in it. I plan on putting a scsi in in place of the current 20meg XT drive that is in it, and scsi drives up to that size are dead easy to source. :)

Got another question about power.

I plugged in from an AT power supply:

yellow 12V, red 5V, and the black ground next to the 12V into the corresponding 3 pinouts as outlined in the 590 manual, but I got nothing happening. Do I need to plug something into the power sense? Or is it simply because I tried to power it without it plugged into my A500? I put a plug directly into the hdd itself and it powered up.

Ok, nevermind, I got it working.

I actually figured out that the diagram in the manual is a mirror to what the power socket really is. (It's looking from the inside out, not directly at the socket from the outside).

Plus I found that I had to have it plugged into the amiga and with a data cable attached before the HDD would power up.
