Minimig BOM List for Digikey
« on: October 30, 2007, 03:49:14 AM »
Please excuse the format of this. Spaces/tabs don't seem to come out right for me when posted in a thread. If you'd like a list in a tabbed format, just send me a PM with your email. I'll probably be tweeking this more later.

This should be a complete list of parts needed to build a 1.1 Minimig when ordering exclusively from Digikey. Comments, corrections and discussion are welcome. I tried my best to build this with parts that are in stock, priced reasonably, RoSH compliant and can be purchased one at a time. It took me several days to sort through all the many choices. Digikey might have had other catalog items to choose from but they didn't always fit all the criteria.

@weirdami

Thanks for the tip. Here's the list again for those who can read this small. :-)
You still should be able to cut and paste into your own doc preserving the format....

Also I forgot to mention these are US$ prices. So if you're using other currency, the price is even better.

@amigadave

I hope others find it useful. With the dollar in a slide, I figure even those outside the USA might find the prices better than purchasing with their own currency locally. All the more reason I tried to make it all RoHS compliant.

I wonder if anyone has figured out how to change the MiniMig from PAL to NTSC?

I'm just happy that it has VGA so I can get away from the old monitors and TV's. If I were able to connect my video toaster to minimig, then I'd probably be interested in NTSC. Otherwise I don't see needing it for myself.

I will delay my MiniMig assembly until a way to make it NTSC is discovered.

You could still build it, attach a VGA monitor, then mod it later when and if NTSC gets worked out.

Have you actually run a system that uses this BOM list ..?

Very good question, and exactly the reason I've put it up for peer review. No I haven't built mine yet, but this is the list I'm ordering. I could go on about my long experience with this type work, but my final working build will be the real certification of course.

If any one checks closely they should find this is a part for part representation of Dennis' BOM with a few minor adjustments to match Digikey's stock. If any obvious errors are found, or a part choice is confusing, please posts about it.

I'll have updates as I get my parts and start building. Meanwhile I'm off to see if my prom burner supports the PIC, or do I need an additional socket attachment. :-)

BTW, that just gave me a thought.... No reason that I couldn't buy some extra PICS, program them and make them available to others at cost. (Chip + shipping). At least to others in north america. I don't know if that's cost effective for those needing international shipping. Oh well better find out about my burner before I go making offers I can't keep.

According to the documentation, my programmer supports the 18Fxxx PICs so that's good news. However it's not clear on how to set up the programmer for this type. More study needed.

@freqmax

True, but some may not be interested in development. For any who would get preprogrammed PIC's they'd have to know they're stuck with what they have. To get further updates, they'd have to get/learn to use a programmer or hassle with more costs and shipping to get future updates.

It's a willem I bought a couple years ago when my old DOS based one couldn't cover all the chip I wanted to use. It looks like this.....

Willem "Enhanced"

By using the WinPic800 software, it's supposed to support 18F PICs. Get that software here... http://www.willem.org/ZIP/WinPic800359.zip

I've not had a chance the past couple days to try it, and tonight I'll be out with kids for tricks/treats. I'll report back when I know more.

Been down and out with a bug for the past few days... time to catch up.

@fuguben

Thanks for double checking. We knew the Spartans were on back order, but the other parts showed  "in stock" when I last looked. I should be able to sub the caps and buttons, but the multimedia card was the last one digikey showed being carried. If we find another source for the Spartan maybe they'll carry a mm-card connector too? Any one know if there's a competitor chip that is 100% compatible with the Spartan? I've started looking, but haven't found one yet.

I'm rarely accused of being sane :-), but it sounds like a good idea to me if it works. (and it sounds like it does)

BTW, has any one checked into using the Spartan 3E? It comes in the same pin package as the Spartan 3 but has more I/O and 500K gates.  If it's functionally compatible otherwise, we might be able to use a 3E instead. Digikey says they have those in stock. I'll be reading some datasheets about it when I get time this weekend.

More I/O's means more pins, and the pinout will be different

The both have 208 pin packages so the solder pads match. It depends on how differnt the pin outs are and IF they are otherwise funtionally compatible.

Great stuff, thanks. Much prettier than the pdf spec sheets I was looking at. :-P
