An ISA switch may help the Amiga "hardware" problem but it makes the "software" problem worse. Even developers which want to support the Amiga after looking at the small market will wonder how they will develop for all of the following.

AmigaOS 3.x 68k (includes UAE, FPGA Arcade, Mist, etc.)
AmigaOS 4.x PPC
MorphOS PPC
MorphOS x86
AROS 68k
AROS x86
AROS ARM

There is no single compiler install which can target all of these platforms and testing would be ridiculous. The amount of pre-processor conditionals for all the different APIs, ISAs and ABIs is already out of control when trying to support them all with a single source. We need standards and consolidation for the Amiga not more dilution and fragmentation.

-Grin- I hope there are more and more flavours. :D

I wish WinUAE and Amithlon is in the list :D : D :):):) Hehehe

And..the MorphOS x64 API will lack legacy support, so that completely shoots the "you can just re-compile it" argument.
Not that that was ever really true.

The current fiasco over MUI proves that.

OS4=Reaction, AROS=Zune, MorphOS=MUI

All issues that have to be addressed when porting.

Weeeeee I am so happy there are three different OS's Hehehe by the way I loooovee aros here. You guys are aware that if AmigaOS.4.1 does not jump to x86 soon....it will lose the battle and die a horrible death. I hope X5000 is x86 or else ouch.

Yes we all love AROS too.
Especially when it lacks specific features or crashes.
Don't be so quick to welcome us to your ISA.

We just might do it better than you.

You know....I hope you do ;). If AROS is an incentive to make you guys compete and do better than ever before then it have done it's job very well :) By the way, if you guys do better than AROS or as you say "We might do it better than you." I will gladly buy a copy of MorphOS even if I did already buy one for my iBook G4. I will gladly spend 150 or 170 euro without hesitation and register an x86 version....as long as you promise that you will do it better than AROS and kick AROS butt...why not? What do I lose? :)

Competition is healthy...very healthy actually...monopoly destroy itself and everyone around....so I want AROS to be the incentive the carrot so to speak for the MorphOS team to do better and better each time :)

However....one cannot deny though...that AmigaOS 4.x is seriously moving very fast in behind the ball game........i have the feeling if AROS and MorphOS compete against each other and one tries to out do the other in the end....AmigaOS 4.x will be the losing game.....and we will have the two BEST AmigaOS alternative out there for the x86 and if AROS merges with MorphOS and still have a kick ass Amiga alternative OS for x86...is till does not change the fact...that AmigaOS 4.1 will die...and die badly....

I am happy to hear that.

Chances are, that MorphOS will only support Apple hardware on x86_64 ;)

I hope not. I hope that is not true. If it is then we went no where. It is still a very expensive x86_64 that is not affordable to my budget.

However, what I like about MorphOS however is the fact that it is a commercial product and not free. Some people would look at me like I am crazy when I say this, but I will tell you why my statement is not only not crazy, but full of sanity, common sense and legit in all regards.

Because MorphOS is commercial, you ending up supporting the developers which increases development of the OS by: adding new features fasters, bug fixes faster and so on. I would go as far as pay for a browser if it means there will be releases of the browser faster with youtube/video streaming feature, bug fixes faster, new features faster...heck be at least as close to modern browser's latest version. If paying means this possible instead of waiting 1 to 2 years for a new version then I will do it in a heart beat and would love it...if it is commercial.

People would say look at Linux...it is free and there is...I would say stop right there...we all know why we can't compare Linux with a very niche and hobby market like MorphOS/AROS.

All I an saying that due to the niche market and due to the small amount of people in the community...if we really want to support MorphOS and even AROS ...we should consider having majority of the software being commercial...especially the ones we take for granted as free like Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, and FireFox....such as browsers as well in a niche market and even the OS have to be commercial. That to me is the only way we can enforce support for people who wish to use these apps and operating systems.

I know people would hate me for saying this....but CD key activation that checks online if you are the legit buyer of the OS like MorphOS is doing but even more securer and done in all their commercial apps...I would love that and be happy with it. If it means limiting or hindering piracy which in itself will hurt the small community, I will be smiling with joy. If I cannot afford such app...then I have to make money first then buy it.
