Issue with BetterWB
« on: March 19, 2015, 09:13:08 PM »
I have an issue with BetterWB. 80% of the C directory files become non executable as soon as I replace the original WB 3.1 files. My system configuration is as follows:

Amiga 500 512 KB chip RAM revision 5 (PAL)
68000 processor @ 7.14 MHz
2 MB Fast RAM from ACA500

Any help would be great.

This will sound stupid, but you do have a 3.1 kickrom installed right?

Right.

Well, that eliminates that then ...

Sorry, I have no idea.

Can you try it from your end?

It works great in WinUAE with a similar config.

You somehow managed to screw up your installation.

BetterWB install & update script always changes all C drawer files with rwe bits ON, it is in fact, one of the last operations performed, and it is even shown on a CLI window.

Probably a matter of not using a cleanly installed 3.1 AmigaOS system.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!

Please hold on still....stay tuned with an update...ok?

It worked now!! :D Thank you so much! Please forgive me for side tracking the topic but I really felt I need to squeeze this in:

WhichAmiga says these are my specs:

CPU: MC68000 8.0 Mhz
FPU: not available
MMU: not available
Custom graphic chip: OCS Denise 8362
Custom animation chip: OCS PAL Fat Agnus 8371
Other custom chip(s): Paula 8364 (rev 0), Gayle (rev 13)
Graphics system: Amiga OCS
Hardware clock: not available
Max. Chipmem available: 512K
Max. Fastmem available: 1536K
ROM chip version: 40.63 (Kickstart 3.1)
Workbench version: 40.42 (Workbench 3.1)
SetPatch version: 43.6

Your computer is an old Amiga 500.

=======================================================================

Here  is my question to this! I ordered Denise 8373 or something like that  from eBay. Can I just easily replace my Denise with this new Denise from  eBay without any difficulty? Would I literally have ECS instead of OCS?  Would I literally be able now to have the ability to switch between  PAL/NTSC when this version is currently disabled now? Will I be able to  switch between ECS/OCS when I hold down the two mouse button if I  install this new chip? Would I have increased color in workbench if I  install this chip?

My A500 is revision 5 it can only do 1 MB CHIP  RAM maximum, I am intending to buy the 512K RAM trap door to install it  in my A500 in the future :)

That's a lot of questions.  ;)

You should do the 1MB chip mem mod if you plan on using enhanced or high res screenmodes.  8371 only supports 512K, so you'll need to pull that out (or push it out from the bottom, PLCC chips are a pain-in-the-arse) and replace it with an 8372.  After that there's a couple ways, including soldering a few spots on the motherboard, or doubling up the chips in their existing spots, etc.  What you decide depends on motherboard version and technical proficiency.  Personally I recommend the version of the mod that converts the 512K in the trapdoor slot into chip ram.

You can also add a "Megachip" adapter after that, which would use (typically) an 8375 Agnus, and give you 2MB.

http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/megachip

ECS screenmodes ain't much to write home about, but me personally, I like 'em, and I like having my Amiga's as "up-to-date as possible", especially since you can buy those chips all day long for under $20.

You start doing these other upgrades, you might as well look at the Indivision ECS.  For under $100 USD this will give you scandoubled output on every screen mode, as well as allow you to use things like the 800x600x16 colors mode.  Make sure you upgrade to 1.10 firmware.  Obviously you'll want an accelerator to use that screenmode.  ;)

Early Startup control ("holding down the two mouse buttons"), you've already got that.  That's part of 3.1.  You do have an actual 3.1 ROM, right?  If not, go buy one.  Just do it.  It's under $20.  Don't listen to these cheapskates who say not to.  Then yes, you'll be able to hold down both mouse buttons and switch screenmodes.  ;)

Like I said, I like ECS, and feeling like my system is "more modern".  But you might want to read what the actual differences are before you start waiving your hat in excitement, about it.  ;)

* Cracks fingers * Here goes with the questions that is coming next. You said that because of my AGNUS itself I can only see 512 KB chip RAM, am I right? Are you saying that in order for my chip ram in my trap door to work as chip ram I have to upgrade agnus REGARDLESS or the attempt is futile? (See how I am going in full details with questions :D Baby  you have not seeing nothing yet with what is coming next).

1) I need to upgrade AGNUS to get 1 MB CHIP RAM?
2) You said my A500 revision 5 can actually see 2 MB CHIP RAM by having an adapter? Are you saying with this adapter I can get the mega chip agnus and have 2 MB CHIP RAM?
3) Is there an actual 1.50 MB trapdoor RAM upgrade?
4) If the answer is no then is there real point in doing this! My A500 motherboard's already filled with RAM to give 512 KB CHIP RAM in default and there is no space to solder more RAM chips.
5) Do I really, really, really, really need to do soldiering, putting wires left and right to do this upgrade? Remember I have revision 5.
6) If the answer no for soldiering and all I have to do is remove the chips and replace them with these chips I might as will do all of that just for the feeling that I have the choice available, where do I find the megachip adapter? How hard to find them? How expensive to buy them? How difficult in installing them?
7) Already coming by mail the super denise can I install it by itself with my normal OCS Agnus that only sees 512 KB or it will fail and need to do the rest of the upgrades?
8) I want to buy the 512 RAM trapdoor and place it as chip RAM and not as FAST ram but are you saying that cannot be done with my current agnus until I do the upgrade?

I already purchased the ecs indivisions but in kickstart 3.1 it fails, the graphics becomes jibberish and non functional!! This is why I am sellling it...it is not working with my A500 and because I removed my denise soooo much the pins are bending horribly but it stil works so I ordered another denise in fear this one will be ruined. I just discovered i ordered a super denise and decided to go through this upgrade since I really want 1 MB CHIP RAM and not 512 KB chip RAM

The only question I need to ask this...in the link it says it is motherboard revision 6 and up. Do I need to do any soldering? Is there someone out there can confirm if I need to do some wiring and soldering? If the answer is no, then I can just buy these chips without worry and do the upgrades easily...as long it is a matter of removing chips from socket and replacing them with better ones.

I need to increase the chip RAM to release me from the limit I will be facing with 512 KB. By having 1 or 2 MB is the best solution for me. When I have 2 MB CHIP RAM or even 1.5 MB CHIP RAM plus soon to own ACA1233 with 128 MB FAST RAM I will be able to have a very will functional and fun experience Amiga system :)

I will be able to programming in Amiga inside workbench comfortable. I will be able to view lots of icons or open more than one window without having out of chip RAM memory. I will be able to use OS 3.5 or even OS 3.9.

I will be able to use things like AmigaSYS or Amikit or these pre-package OS with ease and without difficulty.  But when things start to come to slicing and dicing in my motherboard that is when I say, I better send this to professional to do the installation.

I purchased the fat agnus but the problem I have is slicing and I do not have the tools to remove the original agnus or install the new agnus and do the necessary slicing or moding. Can someone here help me install it? Does anyone know if someone where I live can do the job for me?

I did email amigakit no problem. Oh no, I intend to use my A500 for all my personal Amiga needs..not just for games. My A500 will be used the same way as someone would use their A4000 for their daily tasks, except mine will be in A500 original keyboard case. This cannot be done in a 512 KB chip RAM.

For huge game usage including aga I have AmigaCD 32 and I intend to use CD 32 for games and for that reason. Better start collecting ISO images.
