The root word means man or male. The je at the end of a dutch word implies it is tiny or small.

So translated literally it would loosely mean "ToyBoy". So I think the author is having a bit of fun  with the word "BoyToy"

Correct and as Speelgoedmannetje already mentioned it allows the word to be made small.

The extra letters just allow the suffix to be added to make grammatical sense is all.

Just like in some english words you have to change the root word somewhat when adding a suffix.
