I have a tekmagic 060 in my A2000 and I had to sequentialy add ram and use a smaller hard drive to format the bigger one until the larger was all set, then did an emergency boot disk to back up big one. If a stock Amiga 1200, and you install OS, it should just run to workbench screen. Try  to boot up w/o hard drive....if you get kickstart screen and can boot via disks, drive maybe too big?
