Installing a hard drive/CF card into Amiga 1200
« on: May 12, 2008, 08:37:12 PM »
Hello all :)

I've just recently got my hands on an amiga 1200. All seems well - no problems, everything checks out, software runs as expected, etc.

The one big problem is that the Amiga 1200 I have has no hard drive, frame or cable.

I also have an Amiga 600 which has the same cradle and cable as the A1200; the A600 has a 40MB hard drive inside it.

I tried putting the hard drive and cradle into the A1200 and it worked fine. No problems :) .

But 40MB isn't very much(!) space and really I wanted to put a much larger (2GB 2.5") hard drive into the A1200. I have one of these, it is an IDE hard drive from an old PC.

I connected this 2GB IDE hard drive (carefully, with the case open!) to the amiga and the A1200 detected it ok, I could partititon it and format it ok.

But then the problem! The Amiga 1200's hard drive cradle has the screwholes right in the *wrong* place! Also the 2GB hard drive sits right down on the bottom of the hard drive  which means if I could screw it in, the bottom of the hard drive would short out on the metal cradle x.x :( .

Is there any way to install such a hard drive in an A1200? The screwholes appear in completely the wrong place; the cradle's holes and the hard drive's holes don't match up.

I did read elsewhere something about installing a CF card reader instead of a hard drive but how is that installed into the hard drive frame? Would its screwholes be in the right place; how do you keep it from shorting out on the metal frame?

Thanks

Intresting :) . Thanks for the pointer there! That info lead me to this....

....which also looks intresting! I'm going to try a CF to IDE converter and try it that way!

Thanks
