You could run 1.4 on a 1000, I probably still have the kickstart disk.   There may have been an image trick to get it into a 500 or 2000.   The original A3000's had 1.4 on them.  Even now you can get a 1.4 screen on those computers by selecting correctly on the boot menu.    For those who don't know, 1.4 was abandoned/superceded whatever you want to call it because it broke too many things.  2.0 broke fewer thinks and had lots of patches to get around badly programmed software.
