700k/s doesn't sound that bad for the HC+8. Remember, the card is a ZorroII/16bit card and just isn't very fast.  I think I've seen benchmarks showing slightly over 1M/s but nothing more.  (and, that might have been the result of a GuruROM)
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I stand corrected.   I thought the Zorro II bus limit was less than it is (a little over 3.5M/s).

However, a quick search reminded me of the Zorro II DMA problem with certain versions of the A3640 (rev 3.1 and before).  The GuruROM documenation mentions this also.  I'd look here first.

Whats this Guru Rom documentation site????
Not sure if he meant GVPbut a GURU ROM is very hard to find! :-x

I meant to look into the A3640 DMA problem first.   Sorry, my post didn't make much sense.  If you want to upgrade to a Guru ROM, they still show at www.softhut.com.  But, I think it won't help your problem.  I'd suggest upgrading your A3640 to rev3.2

Hey folks, a bit off the original topic but reguarding the A3640. I am toying with the idea of fitting my A3000 with my dead 4000's A3640 rev3.1. (lacks the LARGE heatsink) How hard is this really. I think Im in the clear because its a rev.3.1. And what should I fear with heat issues?

It will fit physically, but it mightl run a bit hot.  I'd watch the temps and see if they seem too high, and add a fan if needed (you might be able to find a 486 fan/heatsink that will fit under the drives).

I thought the DMA problem was eleviated with rev.3.1 + anyhow..am I correct on this?

According to the Big Book of Amiga Hardware rev 3.1 has the Z2-DMA bug.
