MFMWarp and WWarp can make images of copy protected disks. But, most of the time the copy protection itself can't be preserved like the SPS tool does.

The SPS (formerly known as CAPS) tool is the tool is what creates IPF files.
To answer your other question, I don't know. I don't have a drive that's good enough to write things back to test.
