Ex-Amigan returns...
« on: May 31, 2004, 12:06:06 PM »
Hi All,

I got my first Amiga in 1989 - A500. Literally changed my life, and is the main reason I am where I am at the moment. Since then, have had an A1000, and towered A1200/060 plus extras.

Stopped using them in 1996 when I started my degree, during which I used x86 PCs. Now I want to return. I want to buy an AmigaOne as soon as OS 4 is released. Just sold my A1200/060 to raise the cash for one. OS 4 looks out of this world! Any ideas as to when it might be out?

Thanks guys for the quick reply!

Yeah, I was aware that the developers pre-release was out, but  wasn't sure about it as it's not the final version (bugs, stability, etc.)

Also, the price of the A1 is still quite high for me, especially considering the specs.

Another concern of mine is how much would I actually be able to do on AOS4 - software would be limited at the moment. Granted, I would also be able to use a wide range of open source software if I dual booted Linux, but then I could also do that on a far more powerful x86 machine (and for a lot less money too).

The a1micro does indeed seem quite promising, and I'm guessing price-wise it would be much more competitive than the other A1's. How much do these cost in the UK?

You should take a look at MorphOS on the Pegasos! It looks even better on some things. With the release of the Pre version of OS4 it will be interesting to see what happens.

Hi Acill,

Thanks for that - I was thinking of Pegasos2 at one time, but having realised that AOS4 won't be supporting that platform, I decided instead to go down the A1 route.

haha, thanks for the welcome!

i used to have an 867MHz Apple Powerbook, and although I loved  the machine, it WAS a bit sluggish at times, especially in certain applications like M$ Word etc. That's another one of my concerns - would a similarly specced machine, in the form of the A1, really be much better than my old mac?

I must say that, though the Mac was sluggish running OS X, it did feel much quicker while running Linux, I guess cos of the lack of all that graphical baggage. But then again, if it's Linux that I really want (and its not really), then I shouldnt really bother with an A1, and just stick with my super powerful x86 linux box.

Hmmm, I just don't know at times to be honest. I guess I'll just wait a while and see how things pan out...

One thing though, I really sincerely hope and pray that the Amiga comes back, alive and kicking, and stronger than ever before. Now that would be a dream come true!

wicked wicked wicked

i cant wait for it to happen - i mean AOS4 final version! i think il probably end up buying one anyway, as iv got a new job so i should be able to afford it.

and HopperJF, i think ur right. if its gonna happen, its gotta start with us, old amigans. by buying 1 of these machines and AOS 4, we're supporting the machine that made a difference to us - almost feels like itd be wrong NOT to buy one!

great point HopperJF. but for that, each amiga user has to BELIEVE in the platform. tbh, at the moment, i cant say i do. like i said before, il probably buy 1 anyway, after which i hope (and am sure) that my faith will become strong...

damn, amiga is so cool. that machine always had character, something that todays superpowerful PCs still lack, imho

Thanks HopperJF,

Talking to Amigans like you really raises my spirit. In fact, I first started thinking seriously about an A1 after selling my towered A1200 to a nice Amigan (saturday just gone), who assured me of AOS 4's superiority, and that big things were ahead for Amiga

My heart breaks everytime I look at my trusty old A500 and wonder, what could have been... Maybe things really will be different this time around?

Worst case scenario - even if A1+AOS4 is a complete flop, I still have a machine that I can run linux and MacOnLinux on, so all is well.

In the best case, Amiga comes back out on top, and I'd have had a small part in contributing towards that!

anyway, time for me to sleep now

goodnight all :)
