replacing Celeron with P4 Intel
« on: April 09, 2004, 06:49:52 AM »
Ok, not an Amiga issue, in the least, but perhaps I can justify it somewhat by stating that I wish to make WINUAE load faster....

I have an emachine ( yes I know CHEAP!!) T1742 with IM845GL mobo running a Celeron 1.7 Ghz CPU, in a S478 Socket (400 MHZ Bus speed). Video is ATI Radeon 7000 (PCI).

I know for certain that I can handle at least a 2.0 Ghz Celeron as the same mobo is sold with this CPU in the T2042 model.

I have searched the internet, and found no definative info on this mobo, in regards to the max CPU it will run.

I have found a clearance sale locally that has a P4 Intel 2.4, Gz 400 Mhz bus, S478. The tech says it SHOULD work, but no guarentees. The price is less than 1/3 of one year ago.

Here's where you guys come in, as from all the PC forums I have scanned, Amigans seem to have the most knowledge and expertise in all matters technical in regards to PC's. (Why is that by the way???)

What do you think? Will the P4 Intel work on my mysterious Korean mobo? Will the extra cache (512K) improve performance significantly?

And more important, Will the Toronto Maple Leafs get their act together and start playing descent hockey for the playoffs??

Do not forget to use a suitable cooler for your processor. Look at the the www.intel.com site for the power consumption. How many Watts do your PSU have?

250 watts.

Thanks for the info and the links guys.

Nil return on the 'Leafs' though?
I gotta a wager to hedge with a buddy...

I got them picked to go through to the Eastern Conference finals, but that might have been a bit optimistic, especially after watching how arthritic Belfour looked in game 1.  ;-)

As for PCs, I've been drinkin' a bit, and have no advice, other than to avoid Celerons like the plague.

I'm actually a Flames & Oilers fan but I wish to piss off a buddy of mine who is a rabid leafs fan...

It is a great Canadian tradition to hate the Leafs ya know...

About the 2.4 P4 Intel CPU I found... turns out to be a Celeron, explaining the cheap price...
Oh well . Glad I asked the guy again before buying it.
