What's it origins... 
It's an a.org meme that started loooong before I came onto the scene so I can't tell you who started it but I can tell you why. Most forums I've been to have their own obligatory poll option for those who cannot find an option that matches thier opinion or for those who want to vote without really caring what they vote for, at Overclockers Australia, that option is candy, here it's pancakes
Edit...At some point we even had a pancake smiley, although that seems to have been culled
