Networking Gurus...I need you!
« on: March 06, 2003, 05:04:05 PM »
I have an A4000 w/mediator board, 10/100 NIC,  using AmigaSamba, MiamiDX  and Tango connected to an PC running XP.  Both are connected to a hub which has an internet uplink.  I  am able to see, access and transfer files to the Amiga from the XP box and I can also access the internet with the Amiga, but I can't see the XP box from  the Amiga.  When I load Tango it confirms the presence of TCP/IP, and the hostname of the Amiga but will not show the XP box after trying to Masterbrowse.  I've tried a number of configurations
w/samba.  I'm afraid I'll make things worse, which happened once before.  Any ideas?
I'd also like to print from my XP box to the Amiga.  How do I set that up?

Naaa...it ain't that.  I can see it on the network with other PC machines.  Plus, I forgot to mention this, before I got the XP machine this problem didn't exist.  I was able to see 3 other PC machines on the LAN with the Amiga.  Once I placed the XP box on, it stopped. :-(

Well first things first

1.)  Are you using the same workgroup?  This may seem like a stupid question, but doublecheck it.

No, good question actually.  I thinik I am, but to tell you the truth configuring MiamiDX is a bit strange for me.  Just where would the workgroup assignment be in miami?

2.)  Are you sure you actually have file and print sharing enabled on the Windows XP box?  You can find this in the General tab of the Local area connection.
Yes

3.)  As far as printing is concerned, I would rather move the printer to the XP box, and print from the amiga to the XP box, than trying to sort out the reverse.  That is easy enough to do, get a utility program that allows you to print to a file and execute a command on it, setup a simple batch file which sends it to the XP box with the samba tools.  Once such program is available on aminet called PSpool

Well I tried this with no success one other time.  I suppose I could try again.

Thanks

It seems like the problem, at least from my understanding of it, is that instead of creating a LAN between the 2 computers (or more) with static ip numbers, ie 192.168.1.1 for the amiga and 192.168.1.2 for the xp, etc., both computers are linked to a pre-existing network in which their ip addresses are determined by DHCP and are dynamic.  Thus the problem being how do I get each computer to recognize each other as well as have access to the internet?

sackbut3, I have a setup similar to yours and I could never make Tango work properly either.

For connecting to other machines on the LAN I use SMBFS to mount a local volume on the Amiga.  Works fairly well.
You might also want to look at SMBhandler.

For printing to a printer on the Amiga, that's very easy.

Just download LPx.lha from Aminet and follow the instructions.  Worked first time for me!

If you need some examples of how to set it up, have a look at my live Samba config here:
ftp://samba:samba@amiga.serveftp.net/Samba
Note that I'm using a 3rd party parallel port, not the motherboard one, so the port name will be different for you..

Later,
Anthony.

Thanks man, I'll give all of this a try.
