"Boot with no startup-sequence" should definately give you a Shell output, but not on the graphics card. Try to hook the Amiga up to a tv, so you can see if anything happens on either screen.

If everything fails, strip down the system, and add one thing at a time.

Well, the computer will not break because the monitor cable has been taken out and inserted again even with power on. I must have done this about 100 times or so at this point. It will only break if you try to connect it to a wrong port, but in general it is the best to have the computer switched off while attaching cables.

About the computer not booting. Amiga 1200 motherboards are easy to come around, and most of the times the go for cheap money.

I'm sure that the only thing that needs to get replaced is the motherboard, most likely the other parts are alright.
