@Red:

I've recently moved from WinXP to Ubuntu Feisty (recently as in a few months ago) - Needless to say the transition was pretty painful heh. A few apps (such as Altium Designer 6) don't really have equals under Linux - BUT, once you get over the fact that nothing you *need* works under Linux, it's really quite pleasant :P

I bought a new nVidia card just for the eyecandy provided by Beryl and Emerald (ATi cards are a major pain to setup!). This video pretty much sold me: (vista effects vs Ubuntu + Beryl effects): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ

All in all, it's been maybe 4 months now, and I could proudly say I would never look at, nor even {bleep} on Windows for a desktop machine!

Tried them under Wine?

Yup, unusable! Only thing I have running decently under wine is Flash 8, Flashget and Winrar. Unfortunately that's the only thing stopping me from overwriting Windows on my laptop too, I need Altium designer 6 and MPLab

They work absolutely great under WinXP in VMWare though - If I upgrade to a Core2 Duo (w/virtualization support) as well as 2GB of ram, I can get rid of windows for everything except gaming heh :P

Edit: Get rid of windows as in, not dedicate a whole machine to running it
