New big fat Hard-drive in skinny old amiga 600....
« on: November 06, 2003, 12:48:32 PM »
How cool is this- got my first bunch of questions answered already!!

ok... the next thing on my "to do" list- get a real hard drive in there so I can properly archive all my Amiga software.

currently there is a 120meg hdd in there... but is there a patch or something i need to run (Aminet?) for a 4gig (or more?!) hard disk to run on this machine...?

(Amiga 600, 2.1roms, for those who just joined us)

and... (bonus question....)  the floppy drive is sooo loud compared to my a500... sounds all screechy... will I do damage if I spray WD-40 in there?

Thanks, RW

OK, 90% of that went way over my head I must admit...

But you're saying a 4 gig drive WILL work? That might be enough room... I've only got about 400 meg total Amiga data anyway right now.

Here's a tricky one though.... how can I transfer the data from the current hard drive to the new one?  (Besides using 200 floppy disks)... Can I temporarily hook up more than one hard drive and just copy across? or are there not enough wires in there to handle more than one drive?

Also- when I buy the 4 gig hard-drive... it needs to be one for a laptop hey? (not a standard pc one)

muchos gracias,
RW

Sorry to harp on this- but Im about to go buy the new hard drive... your mention of mini-ide converters reminds me:

this A600 has adapters for regular size IDE fittings!  Will that make a difference?

and WHAT can I do with WinUAE? I have it, didn't realise it was more than just a way of playing bubble bobble on my PC. Can I somehow backup my existing data to it or something?

Thanks so much for your help guys...

;)

OMG- you're in Meblourne too!!!

Im at work in St Kilda, and yes it is 12:19am...

I think it made sense yes... though I'm a little anxious about connecting the drive to my PC without having any backup first...

I bought an 850 meg hdd from the swap meet today- can I get WinUAE to format it for me and then do a bunch of adf conversions first to make sure it worked?

Thanks for your help mate ;)

Attempting to use CrossDos- I do have the PC0: device on my 600.... but do you think I can get WinXp to format this disk at 720kb?

Have taped over the hold and everything... all I get are I/O errors and messages saying it can't format.  I think I need an old version of MS-Dos?
