No need of using scsi, you just need to get 2,5"->3,5" cable or something like this (with this interface you can hook up to 4 drives)

2,5" to 3,5" cable is the cheapest solutin I think, and you can connect every IDE ATAPI drive, even CDRWs, and burn own CDs! :-D

Are there any issues with cable length?

As far as I know, up to 50cm - I used such cable once without  any problems.. And yes. You would probably need to cut some of your case. I did some work with a file on the left side of my case (very small hole just about a 1 or 2 mm), and the cable is coming out to CDROM lying next to my miggy..
BTW my friend has got this eide interface (it fits in standard case), and I must say it works great with 4 drives (2 HDDs, CDROM, and CDRW), it even speeds up a little the hdds..
