Using A500 Kickstart via ACA630/30 card on a A600
« on: September 23, 2013, 03:59:25 PM »
Hi guys.

I'm still pretty new to the whole Amiga scene and have bought myself "a little monster". Amiga 600 with 2MB Ram, 20 GB HD, 3.1 ROM and a ACA630/30 Stealth Accelerator Card.

Now, as far as I understand the website of the ACA630 Card (http://www.jschoenfeld.com/products/ACA630_e.htm), then it should be possible for me to copy a A500 Kickstart on to the card somehow?

I would really like to do this, as there is some essential games from WHD Load I cannot play because my memory and kickstart is too high.

Can anybody help me with "a translation to newbies", on how I actually use this pretty darn cool accelerator card? :-)

All best
Anders, Copenhagen.

You'd probably be better off using WHDLoad to run those old games.  AFAIK there's various ways to softkick an A500 kickstart into an A600 (including physically installing the ROM, or a ROM switcher), but unless you unstall a bunch of other hacks you will lose your hard drive interface, PCMCIA slot, and it still won't address your memory being in a different range than that on an A500.  In other words, just use WHDLoad or get an A500 unless you enjoy banging your head up against a wall.  ;)

Ha ha ha - No No, I haaate bagning my head against The Wall ;-)

Just one more question: You write that I can use WHDLoad to run the old games on my Amiga 600. How does that work exactly? :-)

All best
Anders.

What games can't you play due to wrong Kickstart? The whole idea behind WHDLoad is that it's hardware independent (works on any Amiga/Kickstart), and also the more memory you have available in your Amiga the merrier - it will use any extra memory as required.

WHDLoad does require a 1.3 Kickstart image file ("kick34005.A500" & "kick34005.A500.RTB") in DEVS:Kickstarts for the majority of games at least. It's all explained in the WHDLoad docs though:

http://www.whdload.de/docs/en/need.html

You can also softkick that same 1.3 image too by using acatune at the CLI/shell. Try typing this in:

acatune -maprom devs:kickstarts/kick34005.a500

That line would be useful if you wanted to play old floppy games that don't work on version 2/3 Kickstarts. But remember that the point of WHDLoad is that this isn't required any longer. ;)

Oh my! Welcome to amateur hour (as said in Twin Peaks) ;-) I must admit that I never read the WHD Load instructions. I simply used the Killer Gorilla pack and played away ;-)

So, I'll try to find the various Kickstart images online and take it from there :-) Also, I need to find out whats up with my RawDic. Keeps asking for install floppy when I install games from WHD Load. But that's a totally different story…

THANKS for all The good advices and suggestions.

Anders, Copenhagen.

Don't worry about it mate...everyone has to start somewhere. ;)

If you've downloaded the KG packs then you won't need RawDic as all the games are already installed and ready to use. All that's needed is those kickstart images & .rtb files in devs:kickstarts, and also the WHDLoad command in C: ... if you have those then Bob's your uncle. :biglaugh:

SCARY UNCLE! ;-)

Well, I'll start with the preinstalled game packs then (just need to fond one where Moonstone and ik+ is included). However it would be nice to be able download directly from WHD as well, so I have to figure out how to avoid the error where the installer ask for install floppy :-)

All best

Hi again Paul.

Just to be sure: The kickstart images I need, are the ones that I can find in "Skick346" (http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/skick346) right?

And then I rename the .PAT file and place all the files in Dev/Kickstarts? Just wanna make sure I understand this (for me) most vital operation correctly :-)

All best,
Anders

Hmmmm, strange! For some reason none of the above mentioned methods seem to work for me :-(

I have downloaded Skick346.lha, moved the kickstarts from the unpacked .lha to devs:kickstarts and I still get the same old error message:

(DOS-Error #219 (seek failure) on reading "devs:kickstarts/kick34005.a500".)

I run ClassicWB LITE and have my games on a seperate partition of the HD. But that should not matter, no?

Even when using Paul1981 suggested command line in Shell, I still get no result :-(

Heeeeelp.
