Hi Zadic,

it isn't a "virus" perse but one of the bizarre protections made by Elbox for one of theyr products.

I don't know, why all that is happened on your system but i know, as many other too, that Elbox (IIRC last year), had implemented some strange protection.

The worst of those strange "protections", could have damaged even the RDB of the HD.

Ciao

Hi Kent

AFAIK, those "driver protection", was implemented on the Spider driver (as Lempkee has made me to remember).

After a strongly protest from a lot of customers, the code has been removed. (or i hope so)

Ciao

PS- except this annoying episode, Elbox remains one of the best and active Amiga related company IMHO

Hi all,

Take a loohk to this OLD news from

http://amiga.czex.com/history/11_02e.html

"15.11.2002 KDH drops the sale of Spider USB PCI card & MORE

KDH Datentechnik has stopped the sales of Elbox Spider USB PCI card until further clarification and resolution of this Elbox USB driver problem (RDB trashing code inside).

"KDH is convinced that neither Chris Hodges nor Christian Boehmer create or spread an FUD as you want us to believe. KDH will start selling the Spider again if we get an replacemnet for the Spider software (on CD) and the actions requested by Chris towards Elbox have taken place."

"If the same code is included in other Elbox products too(e.g. pci.library), we certainly will drop the sales of these products also. But you have to understand that our main business is not the investigation of Elbox products. We want to sell products and we want to sell Elbox products too, and we do assume that the manufacturer doesnt take this approach to save his investment. There have to be other and better methods to do this."

Another piece of Elbox's software contaminated?
It is suspected that some versions of pci.library also contain RDB trashing code previously found in Spider USB 2.0 High-Speed card driver."

pci.library too?

Ciao

PS- AFAIK the "protection code" was removed from Elbox drivers but . . . someone could still have it on the own systems.

It is right to remember that, if a customer uses the driver correctly (no mod-hack), the protection would not have to be activated.

EDITED - for thoroughness information and to say that all this situation, had beginning from the fact that Elbox sold an USB card by NEC (720100) with the only modification on the firmware. (in order to obligate of fact, the customers to use theyr Spider USB (overpriced) in place of the cheaper NEC 720100.

. . . .a self-destroing image decision IMHO, from an ethical and professional POV.
