Hi KennyR

i've tried, only for testing pourpose, to use a SFS partition for the IB 2.3 diskcache (for 2 days).

SFS, due its slow delete speed, isn't compatible in a cache enviroment.

Here with the last SFS on a slow 040, doesn't freeze the system but slow down IB even with 400 buffers.

Probably with more buffers . . . .

Ciao

Hi  AmiDelf

yes SFS 1.214 that as already said, doesn't crash the system but it is slow for diskcaching pourposes.

I've switched back to PFS3 18.5.

The best option for all the diskcache pourposes, is PFS3 with at least 400 buffers and the .deldir setted to 0. (no deldir)

I've never had any issues with PFS3, including
IBrowse caches (yet).

the same here from years.

I've downloaded and installed the last SFS only for testing pourpose that still slower than PFS3 in quite all operation..

PFS2 is bugged . . .avoid it :-)

Ciao

PS- if you can, make a partition with PFS3 ONLY for diskcache use and set the deldir to 0 . .(SetDelDir PARTname: 0) .you will fly :-) (and if you have a lot of mem, set the buffers to 600)

@KennyR

I've been using SFS for about six months now and run iBrowse 2.3, can't say I've had any problems with the cache, in fact I've found browsing the cache under SFS much faster than it was previously under FFS.

all is faster than FFS :-)

Can you post your SFS config (and version)?

Mine is:

SFS 1.214 with 300 buffers

SFSconfig <>NIL: PartitionName: 32 8192 107 5 1 COPYBACK

Thanks

Hi KennyR

128 buffers aren't enough for SFS/PFS IMHO. . . and not only for the cache partition.

As already written, try to do an "Upgrade Filesystem" with HDToolbox to the latest version 1.214 (no needs to reformat from your version).

Set the buffers to 200 at least (300-400 is better)

Add in your UserStartup the above mentioned SFSConfig line and the system shouldn't freeze, no more.

All the above NOT for a  diskcaching  use. (as you alredy said)

Ciao

Hi KennyR

but at which buffers are you speaking about?

I'm speaking about the number of "partition buffers" for each partition (set in HDToolbox or with the AddBuffers command).

Hi KennyR

with all the respect . . .have you taken in consideration that your "esoteric" theory, could be the reason of your disk failure?

Onestly, i've never heard before a so "bizarre" theory and i know gazillions of users that uses IB2.3 with SFS from a life.

As already said, SFS isn't the best for diskcaching, but doesn't freeze/crash nothing if correctly configurated.

AddBuffer KennyR, beleive me :-)

Hi AmiDelf

you can add buffers, within HDToolbox for each partition OR from a shell:

Addbuffers YOURpartition: xxx

where xxx is a positive number.

To check your partition buffer, type in a Shell:

Addbuffers YOURpartitionNAME:

and see how much are it OR check it from HDToolbox.

Ciao

PS- FFS 80 default

    PFS3 from 100 to 600

    SFS  average 200-400 suggested

Hi AmiDelf

i've read again you previous post.

You have the same SFS version, OS, HD and so from 1999 and the problem happens now?

mhhh . . .i'm thinking that the problem could be another one.

Which HD controller? and OS?

Ciao

EDIT- ops sorry you already post the config.

So try to check your HD flat cable also and if you can, install BB-2 (that upgrade HDToolbox)
