erm, by proper i take it you mean the onboard ide?
i have an A1200 with a blizz030 mk4 which has seen the following and worked:-
unbuffered butchered ide cable driving both hard disk and cdrom
basic IDEfix97 buffered board (the shaped board that sits upright from the ide port to fit desktop cases)
IDEfix97 Express buffered board with the gayle clip on doobrey
currently has power flyer mark 4 thing that clips on the roms and stuff
oh yeah, and pcmcia network card...
all working good.
