Backup using MakeCD

OK, it's time to free some HD space. I have an old backup CD of my dload dir, and I just wanted to add some files in (multisession).

That's how I prepared the CD:
I've added the files I wanted to get rid of the HD, to the CD (keeping the paths the same as the old ones).
At the end, I added a CD-Track containing the latest session. This according to the manual, if added at the end, gives priority to the new files above it, while keeping the non common files of the previous sessions.

What I expected to be done is to replace the existing files on the CD with the newer ones of the HD (that's why I added the CD track at the end), and add some others that weren't in the CD.

The fact is that I get an error, that the directories already exist. I thought that it checks only for the files of the previous sessions to be ignored, and not the directories also.

Any ideas on how to add files/dirs for a multi-session backup?

Multisession works. You just have to include in the sources, the CDR track of the last session. What really does, is to include the previous CD-tree & files (CDR track), plus the new ones (file system).

It's been a lot of time since my last AMiGA CD-burn, but this CD must have been burt with TAO and the CD-session fixed (not the whole CD-fixed). Else you won't be able to read the CD files. This allows you to add a session later.

The problem is that I have to add files to existing directories (older files get ignored, but what happens to whole directories?).

From the MakeCD guide

CD-R Track
     Use the popup gadget to select the track that you wish to record
     into the ISO image. You can record more than one track from the
     same CD into the ISO image.

     Please note that the sequence of the sources is important. If
     files from the hard drive should have precedence over files with
     the same name that have already been burned, cite the CD-R track
     *after* the files from the hard drive.

     For example, if you burn a data CD in four sessions and you would
     like to have access to all the data in each session, when you
     create a new ISO image, simply record the last track that was
     burnt into the image. This will make all the data on the CD
     visible. If you forget to do this once, e.g. if you did this for
     track three but forgot to do this for track for, do not worry.
     Simply record both track three and track four into the next image
     (track five). If there is no new data in the new image, the track
     will take only seconds to write and uses a minimum of storage
     space on the CD. However, fixing the session will, as usual, cost
     about 13.5 MB.

As Framiga said, you just have to sellect "multivolume"  on the CacheCDF  FS-sellector. Then, pops up a window with the sessions you have written and you sellect the one you like. Afterwards you`ll be able to see only the files included in that specific track/session.

 I know, but I`m left with only 1 CD-R (the phillips was dead, less than a year I bought it. Fanno veramente schiffo `sti masterizzatori da 4 soldi!), and it`s on the PC side :-( .
As for leaving the session open, this is obligatory for burning "audio" tracks: The CD-players can read only the first session (containing a certain number of tracks that equals the number of songs). Every track/song added after a closed session is not seen by the CD-decks.

MakeCD: Aggiungi->Finestra Opzioni Tracce:
Sorgente: Tipo->Filesystem (click sulla freccietta)

Impostazioni immagine ISO: Sorgenti->Aggungi
Tipo: Filesystem (ripeti per tutti i files che vuoi aggiungere)
Tipo: Traccia CD-R (Scegliete una traccia sorgente) Qua' scegli la sessione precedente che vuoi aggiungere ai nuovi files (il CDR con la vecchia sessione deve essere inserito).
OK.-> Scrivi tracce... e VIA!

Non dimenticare di tornare a FS tipo Multisessione, utilizzando CacheCDFS prefs. Prova a fare qualche CDRW, cosi' non rischi di rovinarli ;-)

Final note:
Unfortunatelly, there is powerfull software for AMiGA but it has lost the kind of feeling of the first years (straight forwardness, intuition, easy of use). Seems more like the LinUX mayhem.

In this case a comparison with software on the "other" platform seems inevitable: The Nero burner is easy as DOpus4, you just have to drag&drop what you need to add, delete what you don`t want anymore (as a matter of fact, this means that these  files are hidden to the new session), and overwrite files (the same thing as deletion, more or less). The files of the previous session appear ghosted.

The point is that the same job can be done with less sweating, just a few clicks (does it ring you a bell?) and you know exactly how will be the final CD session: appears on your edit window!
