with a 2X SCSI external CD-ROM drive

Thats an quite old drive !!!
The error-message sounds like the CD sends corrupted data.

May be that it doesn't like the used brand of CD-Rs or no CD-R at all.

Try to copy files from a "normal" CD to check that.

You might also check temination and power-supply.

What kind of controller are you using ? Has the CD an extra PSU ?
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@Kurt

I don't think he would be able to "see" the files if the CD had the
wrong format. Must be some kind of read-error.

When I had my A1200 (with 3.0) I used a pre-IDE Mitsumi on a
PCMCIA-Contoller. CD-R were nothing more than a wet dream back
than, and when they finally appeared the disks were often unreadable
in older drives.

I even got a 16xTEAC here that will make nothing but trouble when I
feed it with a certain brand of CD-Rs.
