It is really simple:
Both sides won't be able to survive just with their "toy OS" any time sonn, so they need an external source of income.
For Genesi it is Linux, for Hyperion it are Mac-ports and similar.
AInc/KMOS ? Don't even know wether they have any real income or costs, and Eyetech adds very little to the actual development.
Wether MAI has enough cash to ever get the next generation out is something we just have to see.
What leaves that for us, who are interested in those "toy"-OSes ?
Judge based on what works how today. Forget all insider-information or announcemnts, they have prooven to be far to unreliable in the past.
Judge the HW based on how good it works or not, wether you can use it for other stuff not available for the toy-OSes and wether it gernerally suits your needs.
Judge the future of the t-OS (  ) by the people who actually contribute to them, not by the advocates.
