You tried with three different hard drives and two different controllers, and they're all failing at "Please insert volume ENV in any drive"?

Just throwing it out there, are you using HappyENV or EnvHandler or any of the other "ENV" replacement utilities?

If not, you should be (I recommend the latter), but that's for neither hear nor now.  Just really odd that multiple different drives all fail at the same point.

Simplify, check the tick jumper and remove any extra boards till it boots, then add them back one-by-one.  +1 for switching to the A3000 onboard SCSI and RAM, and ditch the GVP.  ;)
