Looks like the P1 used the D-sub connector. AFAIK there are still places that sell that cable new?  Have you tried ebay?

Would your original cable work coupled with a straight-through 9-pin extension cable?  Just a thought, probably still better to make your own.  I recall someone selling 23-pin connectors a while back on ebay, or you could get a 25-pin parallel port one and lop the end off.  But you probably know that already.  ;)
