Idiot's guide to installing FAT95?
« on: December 04, 2013, 09:35:07 PM »
Hi,

Is there one?  Because I need it.  Trying to install FAT95 so I can use a spare SD card in one of the slots of my card reader to transfer files.  I have fat95 installed in L:, and an old 256MB SD card formatted as FAT by my PC, but from reading the docs it looks like I need to create some kind of mountlist entry, as well?  Or use a tool called "fatmounter.lha", that's nowhere to be found?  I've mucked about in HDToolbox for a while but nothing obvious there.  You'd think it would be easy, set up the card and change it's file system to fat95, partition and format it... nope, nothing on Amiga is ever that easy, LOL.  :p

Anyone got this working right that would like to pass some tips my way?

Thanks!

I tried creating a mountlist based on modifying one of the "MS0" files, combined with some of what I saw in the "Examples" file.  I've tried adjusting values like HighCyl and BlocksPerTrack to match my device, I've also changed them to some of the values from the Examples file, but no luck.  Best I'm able to get is "Not a DOS disk" errors after I mount the entry and try to access it.  Suggestions?

I've tried it with two different brands of card, Kingston and Sandisk. I know it's not the card because when I format them with good 'ole HDToolbox as standard Amiga partitions, they work fine. Just trying to figure out how to set up as Fat95 is a real head-scratcher!

afaik there is no "setup" you just install it and it should "just work" if its in L: it should work.

I think that only applies to A600/A1200 using compactflash.device off Aminet (cfd.lha). For other devices you need to create a mountlist. The Fat95 docs have some examples (like zip drives and magneto-optical disks) but nothing even remotely similar to what I'm using, so I have no idea what that mountlist entry should say.

Disregard, I figured it out. I reformatted my card as FAT32 (which probably didn't make a difference), but then I changed my Unit # in the mountlist from 13 to 31, based on information found here: http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/SCSI/SCSIExamples.html and that seemed to do the trick! It had to do with the LUNs to access my particular device.  Now copying files to the SD card on my Amiga, pop it in the PC and read them there, and vice versa. A little more testing is in order, but she should be good to go. W00t!:pint:
