ive had the red light flashing  everytime i soft reboot my main 1200 ..to reset i must turn it off an on from power ..so if red is kickstart  how come a hard reset works  an a soft reset  doesnt ?

Just throwing this out there, but I don't think your problem is in any way related to OP's.  You might want to look at something in the OS 3.5 ROM update, if it does the same sort of soft updates as 3.9.  Try booting off a plain old 3.1 Workbench disk, then hit Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga and see if you have the same problem.

Yes i did notice at one point when I inserted the ROMS and turned the machine on they did get hot. Guess that means they are fried?

Would you recommend upgrading to 3.1?

3.1 can be bought from AmigaKit or many ebay sellers for under $20.  IMHO no reason for anyone to not run it unless they're trying to build a truely "retro" system.  ;)

Have you checked your capacitors?

I'd just start with a visual inspection - are any of them bulging, leaking, etc.?  Feel free to post photos if you have any questions.  I tried googling to come up with a list, but was directed to a dead link.  Perhaps you'll have more luck or time to research - but it shouldn't take long for a visual inspection.  Good luck!  :)
