Possibly something like the Squirrel SCSI interface (plugs into your A600's PCMCIA slot and gives you a SCSI port) would work for retrieving your old files?  You'd still need some kind of chassis to put the drives in that provides power, but you should be able to find one of these on ebay pretty cheap (many old Mac external drive cases should work, for example).
