HELP OS 3.5 install problems!!

But on to you're problem, this could be a couple things.  First, when you did the fresh install of 3.1, did you do it on a new drive/fresh partition?  If so, did you format it with DC-FFS?  IF SO, then you're f*d, and you're best option is to reformat it with standard FFS-INTL and reinstall 3.1 again.

I've been where you are - Workbench starts to boot, volume SYS: (or whatever, in my case, it was Workbench3.9:) invalid, then bam - red screen of death.  There's a long technical reason for this, which is still a thorn in my side to this day.

Other option might be that it's a software problem.  Have you tried isolating each line in S:Startup-Sequence and S:User-Startup?  See if you can determine - is it a specific program that it's crashing on?  AFAIR a fresh install of 3.1 shouldn't install anything that would make your system unstable, but maybe for your 4000 system it's missing some crucial driver or something?

PS - I'm driving a dog-gone '72 Buick right now, the last of my Olds'es is up on blocks out in the garage with only half a transmission in it.  Darn Buick, that thing breaks down on me about every other week - thought I was getting a good deal - should've stuck with Oldsmobile! :-o

Are you anywhere near Northern Virginia?  I've only met one other Olds collector around here, his name was also Mike, and he had 3 Oldsmobiles, one of which was a convertible (same as my collection - sniff - used to be).  I called him "my evil twin."   :-o  :-D

Ok, as far as the startup, I'm sure somebody else besides me probably has a better idea, but how I do it is like this:

Since I'm frequently changing stuff, I keep several backup copies of my Startup-Sequence and User-Startup in a subdirectory.  When I want to see my system boot like Linux, diagnostically, I copy something like the following as the main S:Startup-Sequence:

C:MakeDir RAM:T RAM:Clipboards

Echo "Mounting ENV data..."

C:MountENV

Echo "Starting FBlit..."

C:FBlit

Echo "Starting MCP..."

C:MCP
-------------------------------

Etc.  Sorry, that's not exacly the whole thing, but I'm at my PeeSee right now, staring wistfully at my Miggy, and wishing it were a Pegasos. :-D

But the point of all this was, now as it's executing the Startup-Sequence, it first displays a line saying what it's doing.  Then if you see it crash, you should have a pretty good idea what line caused it.  Then, going back into Ed, try commenting out that line (with a ; character at the beginning), and see if it then will boot.
