Might be some clash with the driver in ROM on the GVP card being to old and using something 3.1 doesn't like.
Get someone to burn out the latest version of the ROM (gvpscsi.device) onto a new EPROM (so you keep the old one as backup) and give it a try then. An image of the latest version can be found
here.
