For the positive/negative, do a search on google for monitor timings.

Otherwise regarding the issue of defining screenmodes - just choose a vesa screenmode from the predefined list of screenmodes. For normal screenmodes they will in most cases provide optimal performance and proper timings. If you need to create a custom screenmode, start with the closest vesa screenmode and modify it.

The positive/negative setting most likely sets wether the sync goes from 0 to 1 or 1 to 0 when going from normal (drawing pixels) to the sync interval.

You should not have to fiddle with stuff like that normally though and that was the reason for my first answer.
