A500-accelerators are definately not a waste, they will make your old A500 fly compared to stock performance. Almost all accelerators (GVP included) have onboard 32-bit fastmem and will only utilize the 16-bit bus for accessing motherboard resources such as chipmem and thus the cpu-performance wont suffer.

The graphical performance of the chipset is ofcourse the same. Though keep in mind that when using something that requires some cpu performance such as the Workbench or a flight-simulator it is not the performance of the chipset that is holding it back and making it feel slow, it is the performance of the cpu. As I said earlier, it literaly flies when using an accelerator, especially when using the Workbench - take my word for it. If you yet havent tried out an accelerated Amiga, it is something you need to write down on your "todo-list" :=).
