Hi all,

Thanks to the good people on these forums I now know what accelerator is in my original A1200 (Apollo 1230 Mk-III with 16MB), however it seems it's not good enough to run games like Fear, Doom or Alien Breed 3D particularly well.

It even struggles with Frontier Elite II on high when in a planetary atmosphere near a city.

I've had a look on Ebay and there's not a great deal there, at least not at a reasonable price, theres an Apollo 1260 66Mhz for an insane price of £379.99 which I'm sure would be more than adequate, but I don't want to spend that much!!

I have a modded 300W ATX PSU so power isn't an issue.

If anyone has any suggestions and can point me in the direction of a good accelerator that will fulfill my needs that would be great.

I'm getting pretty bored of modern gaming (hence why I dug out the ol' 1200) and I'd like to get the best experience possible on my Amiga...for a reasonable price!!

Thanks people!

Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like I'm going to have to try to find myself an 060 accelerator.

I'm liking the sound of the Apollo 80Mhz 060 XDelusion mentioned. What would the cost of such a card be?

Ebay prices (if I would be lucky enough to find one) seem to be massively inflated, although that probably just reflects the rarity of the hardware.

Lots of options to think about!

The PPC option certainly seems like something to think about, but what sort of compatibility issues might there be, if any? And would it fit into a  standard A1200 or would I need to consider a tower mod?

I'm extremely out of touch (over a decade) with anything Amiga at the moment! I need to do a bit of research.

I'm an IT guy (PC's mostly), but most of what you just mentioned went right over my head!!

Currently I have a 4GB CF card installed that I recently brought from a guy on ebay with WB 3.1, WHDload and over 2000 games.

My experience is literally just gaming on the Amiga, my Workbench knowledge is pretty much limited to executing programs, this needs to change!

Ofcourse, games that require RTG graphics or PPC processor (Wipeout, Quake, Heretic II etc) wont run, but for that you probably have a pc or mac anyway.

Yep got a fair bit of gaming hardware, PC's and consoles!

I think I'll try to get hold of an 060 accelerator, probably won't be easy (or cheap) to find one though. That said what sorting of cooling issues would I get?

I'll put a post on the buy/sell forum when I'm ready to take the plunge and learned a bit more about my 20 year old A1200!

Good to hear!

There's an 060 on Ebay at the moment, here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Amiga-1200-Apollo-1260-68060-Accelerator-66MHz-64MB-RAM-/350579617292?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D538776492691794091%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26

However it looks a touch chunky to fit into the trapdoor, and does say for a tower only.

Is £380 the sort of price I'd be looking at or is that overpriced?

Thanks for all the info, you've all been extremely helpful!

£220 - £280 is definitely a much more attractive price!

The hunt for an 060 begins!

Someone further up (Xdelusion) mentioned contacting a member called Stachu, I'll PM him first and go from there.

Cheers!!
