As I recall, the body of the unit should be facing left, hanging over some circuitry. The 44pin socket that plugs into the motherboard should have a riser block attached to raise it about half a centimeter. If that's missing, it might explain why it doesn't seem to fit.

Yeah, it was a desktop case. With the 1200 facing you (ports to the back), the board is oriented the same way as the second photograph on this page. The SCSI ribbon cable pops out at the other side, beneath the floppy drive / next to the mouse port.
