Pressing 's', 'u', or 'c' should work. I don't have a 3.9 machine in front of me right now, but I believe the gadgets have keyboard shortcuts assigned.
If that doesn't work, save the changes manually by getting Save As... from the menu and saving as ENVARC:sys/screenmode.prefs. Then reboot.
