Didnt Lightwave turn into Maya? or am I mixing up two different things?

Maya and Lightwave are two, *TOTALLY* different 3D packages.

Maya is mostly used in Film (though a few game companies are getting smart and migrating away from 3D Max, but Autodesk is trying to market 3D Max for games and Maya for high quality CGI films). Pixar, Lightstorm and ILM use Maya.

Lightwave is mostly used for Television. Just about any show on SyFy (such as BSG), uses Lightwave, since Zoic is the primary effects company for any SyFy produced show.

My avatar, to the left, was done completely in Maya. ;)
