CD32 with power (?) problems
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:22:39 PM »
Hi there,

I spent some time searching the forums but couldn't find a thread about just the problem that I seem to be having, hopefully you'll be able to give me a few tips...

I've tried to resuscitate one of our CD32s (both have been boced and shelved for a long time) unfortunately to no avail, here's what I've tried so far:

  • last time it actually "worked" it showed a blue screen on TV, and one green led blinking, the other one continuously on (this was several years ago, to my best knowledge)
  • when I tried to turn it on again, nothing happened this time...
  • as described here http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/amiga_hacks/Amiga_Power_supplies/body_amiga_power_supplies.html#Adding_a_new_PSU_to_a_CD32, I have converted a fully functional 500W ATX PSU into a beefed-up CD32 PSU
  • as described on the same page, I bypassed the CD32 power switch
  • I "tweaked" the ATX PSU into supplying power even while not actually attached to a mobo by pulling the PWR_ON to GND
  • I connected a multimeter and several fans to the PSU (which is so silent that it's almost hard to tell if it's on)
Now, and this is where I need your help - I think - unlike what I was hoping for and almost expecting, when the CD32 is connected and the PSU is switched on (using its bespoke switch), nothing really happens...that is, to the CD32...I do see something else:

  • the CD32 blinks and clicks
  • the PSU fan spins for half a second
  • the other fans spin up and stop again
  • the voltage (+12-pin) goes up and drops back to almost zero
My amateur-conclusion was that the PSU must be going into some kind of protective mode...since it works fine again as soon as the CD32 is disconnected again...

Hoping for some good tips...I

Cheers,
Jopie

Did it tried on a standard CD32 PSU?

I tried it on the original CD32 PSU first, ad it didn't do anything at all :|
That's when I started looking for plausible reasons / known fixes...
