Title: New 3d versions of popular 2d Amiga games?
Post by: BigBenAussie on June 29, 2004, 09:18:30 AM
I was wondering the other day what kind of games might be appropriate for the next gen Amiga platforms. The classics excelled in 2d games and seeing as the Amiga is a retro machine I figure remakes of the games that made it great presented in 3d would be fantasic, now that the new base platform will at least have the capability of an XBox.

The community obviously doesn't have the resources of the biggies in games industry and its likely that future Amiga games would be the realm of bedroom coders, who would hopefully be compensated adequately by the community in terms of sales. (We really can't have the rampant piracy of the past. It would ruin future software endeavours.) Anyway these retro games presented in 3d don't need the magnitude of content or production values of the console games and can be as limited in scope as their 2d counterparts, whilst focusing on gameplay, which should always be the aim.

Finally, to the reason for the post....
I was wondering if the Amiga platform has several Amiga only characters(similar to Sega's Sonic or Nintendo's Mario) or famous games that could be leveraged to produce desireable 3d versions.

What famous Amiga games of yester-year would you like to see updated to 3d?
Are there copyright issues?

This thread isn't about whether 2d is better than 3d and I would hate for it to degenerate into that.

Greetings,

What a cool idea! Hmmm, for 2d games classic to 3d games in mind. Alien Breed 3d 1 and 2. First person shooters. Surely took advantege of those expanded miggy's. And They are availble.
Now the other classics like Turrican trilogy(1st person and network capable as well) but that would be too expensive to develope on A1 or Pegs.

A mascot of Giana Sisters would be cool. 8-) or A real live person! :-o At the same time a 3d version of the game would be very appealing to classic and newbies alike.

I'm sure those few steps are important to revive an already stagnant market share. Err.. very meager market share. Time can only tell.(crossed fingers 3x) :-)

Cheers!

Not sure about Turrican, what made it great was the fact it was 2d....  Anyway, it would still look cool in 3d, with deathmatch and all the funky weapons and powerups etc.  There's just a few too many FPS games out there (Unreal etc) already.

Imagine though an FPS deathmatch set in the "Aliens" inspired levels of Turrican II, or even atop a futuristic train a la Turrican 3?

There was a Turrican 3D: http://www.nemmelheim.de/turrican/other/turrican3d/ .  Unfortunately, it was canned.

I Believe that if Turrican should have a chance to make it as a 3D game. It shouldn't be as a FPS but more like "Ratchet & Clank" for the PS2. Maybe some of the levels could be a standard platform game, and others more FPS like. That would also give the game a more interesting gameplay.

Don't forget a good game isn't just good graphics. 3D or other eyecandy stuff is just something to make it more interesting.

hm, also, zool could be an Amiga mascot

Hoya!

I do NOT really believe 3D could "improve" a 2D game.
Those are two different feelings and concepts.

What would be cool would be former Amiga programmers coding games for the new Amiga... But using their unvaluable know-how!

As for Turrican in 3D... Well, the major point of a platformer is being able to see from the side. 3D would totally kill it IMHO.

Be funky

Yeah 2D and 3D are as different as chess and football.

"Hitman 3 Contracts" rocks... Mmmmm Eye candy :-D

Turrican could be good as a 3rd person shooter, but it would have to move faster than most 3rd person games of today.

Superfrog done in the style of Sonic Adventure would be a laugh ...

both 3d platform games with 2d gameplay

AmigaOne really needs something to catch the eyes of the gaming
mainstream and resurrecting old classics would be the ideal way to do
this.

Look at classic NES game Metroid - Metroid Prime competed favourably
alongside Halo!

It's a pity a lot of characters we would consider Amiga mascots
strayed to other platforms. Lemmings went multi-platform as did Worms,
Zool and even Oscar appeared on SNES.

Then Whizz went to SNES. The PC had Super Stardust (but I'm informed
it was rubbish on PC) and so we are left with very little in terms of
exclusivity. Even Dune 2000 came out for PC.

Maybe we could get some fresh faces, I'm not that enamoured by
Superfrog or Sabrina.

For 2D -> 3D conversions I think Alien Breed has to be in there
somewhere, Stunt Car Racer and maybe Stardust. Gloom has a strong
following and Breathless caused minor ripples in the Amiga fps
community.

I think originality is key - not just endless ports of 6yr old PC
games.

:-)

Your all forgetting SUPERFROG!

that was an amiga only game.

it was great!!

i think zool was also amiga only.

both these games would be a good 3d game on ps2
coz xbox sux like a slut.

"Paint my wintel pc green and you get an xbox"
crap.

Rick dangerous or superfrog would suit as mascot.

Hmm, you Euro folks suprise me. Being an OLD original Amiga person from 85-91 (Who the heck is SuperFrog and Turrican? oh wait Turrican was a value title here!).

Let's see Amiga yesteryear titles that I remember. Okay, Amiga MindWalker, Marble Madness, Shadow of the Beast, The Bards Tale and all of the Electronic Arts titles. Lemmings, Lemmings, Zoom!

The most famous Amiga software was definitely that from EA, followed closely by LucasArts (Monkey Island), Sierra Online (remember Kings Quest, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry). Oh and lets not forget Space Ace and Dragon's Lair by Readysoft..

Also I'd love to see Cinemaware port Rocket Ranger and Defender of the Crown (in 3d) back to the Amiga (at least doing Retargetable Versions). It's so cool even the demo version.

I have seen an SDL 3d port of marble madness called Marbles..

Greetings,

Hmmm since we're in the subject of Porting games, how about porting those Arcade Beat'em Up Games like SNK vs CAPCOM 2 Or Marvel VS. CapCom with QSound tech support! Shooters like Time Crisis 3 or Silent Scope 2 would also be nice with Light Guns in mind! That would kick ... 8-)

Remember OutRun? How about, for a newer port, Grand Tursmo II and similar racing games or Better! Like to see that Redone. That will push the Amiga into extrme 3d renderings!

A 2d game like METAL SLUG 2 would be nice ported as well. If all the games I mentioned were possible to port.

Cheers,

Gizz

@gizz72

Why the heck would one waste time to port games like SNK vs Capcom, Metal Slug etc when they're already fully playable under emulation?
Title: Re: New 3d versions of popular 2d Amiga games?
Post by: gizz72 on June 30, 2004, 04:53:59 PM
@Philips

Yor're right about the amount of time to code that version on the Amiga.
I think it's much better to play a version/conversion of such games I mention on the Amiga. Emulating would have its limitations as well, while a version of a game on the Amiga running natively would depend on the coder. One good exeample of a good(almost) conversion/version is the Mortal Kombat 2.

Cheers :-)

I think Liberation deserves an update (yes, I know it's technically already 3D). That game was ahead of its time when it was first released. A new version with network multiplayer support would be amazing.

Wishful thinking mode ON: Each player would take control of a single droid and they would all need to cooperate and share clues to find the captives. Or there could be a competitive mode where the first droid to find the captive wins. Ah, that would be fun.

I'd also suggest Litil Divil for an update, but I'm quite satisfied with its current incarnation.

I'd like to see new versions of Fairy Tale Adventure and Alternate Reality. At one time, Alternate Reality was supposed to have been reworked into Alternate Reality Online (by the creator Philip Price and musician from the original Gary Gilbertson), but that didn't go anywhere.

Well since Sega has the publishing rights to Worms now, why not a
ressurection of Lemmings?

I think if Lemmings got 95% Gold Award style reviews on AmigaOne the
world would sit up and notice.

If Lemmings did this and suddenly AmigaOne got SENSIBLE S:-oCCER 3D
for dessert...

:-D :-D :-D :-) :-D :-D :-D ;-) :-D :-D :-D

Though liberation was a bit w***.  Only thing going for it was the voice-overs :-)   3D only very very loosely!

"what you doing down here drekhead?"

lol

What was the other one?

sonething along the lines of

"Arent you scared the travellers will get you?"

Micro machines etc etc

Would be great to have a pin-up Egg out there doing the nasty again :-)

Cannon Fodder. It needs to be resurrected.  :-D

Or how about a new version of the Cannon Fodder/Sensible Soccer combination game? I think that was one of the the CU Amiga or Amiga Format coverdisks (maybe a Christmas edition?).

@ Naeem

Classic, isn't it? I think Liberation's voice acting puts many modern attempts to shame. It's an incredibly detailed, atmospheric game once you get into it. Even now I've never made it past the second mission.

Why not a 2d SVGA (1280*1024, 32 bit colour, antialiased) version of sensible soccer? I mean, arcadey feel with a HUUUUUGE look on the playfield. I also think it'd give it a more strategic touch. :-)

Excellant! I like this discussion, let me a clear a few things up by adding my gaming knowledge to the pool.

First off, Lemmings, my all time fave game. In 3D? it was done. Came out on the PS1. Cool soundtrack, lousy game. They then brought out Lemmings revolution for the PC for about 2 microseconds before the bubble burst and the Lemmings franchise died aroundabout the time a 500mhz PC was cutting edge.
Also, I have word that Psygnosis and her respective copywrites have been absorbed into Eidos in europe and the developers in the US folded into Sony, and while this could mean a re-release of lemmings, don't hold your breath.

Syndicate was re-done, also on the PS1 as syndicate wars, a sort of 3-D isometric game which was very good. There also working on a counter-strike mod which is based on Syndicate.

Monkey island as you will almost definatly know is now a   3-D game for the PS2 and PC.

But other than that I think only older gamers would get this sort of game. Rick dangerous would make a fantastic comedy tomb raider game, Zool as a 3d sonic affair wouldnt be too bad either.

I personally think games like North and South could make a excellant 3-D comeback, as would Lost Dutchmans Mine and a modern take on Milennium 2.2 would be good, it would end up looking a bit like homeworld (which isnt a bad thing at all).

Oh and by the way, wasn't BC Kid the amiga mascot? They had about 20 diffrent mascots at the time so I guess its hard to tell which one is the official one. Which one had more than 1 game?

Ooooh YEAH! Totally amazing game for the time (runs pretty well in UAE, too!) and a multiplayer updated version would rock. It'd be amazing if it could use the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic engine, or something similar...

 8-)  :-D
