Post by: gizz72 on June 29, 2004, 08:28:57 AM
Greetings,

An event worth watching. The Cassini fly-by at Saturn (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/main/) on July 1.

Don't forget the pop-corn!

Cheers!

Hum,
the word on the street is that the latest weather reports from Australia indicate that the 70 meter dish at Canberra may have to be stowed away due to high winds.
(This antenna is the only one on NASA's Deep Space Network sensitive enough to detect the signal from Cassini's signal indicating that the orbit insertion burn burn was completed successfully.)

If the dish is not operational scientists will have to wait several more hours before contacting the spacecraft.
The orbit insertion itself will not be affected in any way.

The  an - ti  -  ci  - pa  - tion....

I hear that Cassini will fly straight through one of the rings. Even though in average, the rings are thinner than a sheet of paper, there are enough big lumps in there to cause problems if it hits one.

Hum,
Cassini will use its antenna dish like a Spartan hoplite shield (i.e.. Leonidas (http://library.flawlesslogic.com/spartan.htm)), unfortunately that only leaves the small low gain dish free & pointing at the earth...

Let's just hope the hoplite doesn't get trampled by a war elephant.

:inquisitive:
Er...blob....that 'Leonidas' link of yours. If you venture a few clicks further you'll that it is all very scary stuff.

'April 20 of this year [1989] is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the greatest man of our era[...].' :nervous:.

Heh. The far right has a selective memory, as always. They hail the warrior ethic of the Spartans, while totally ignoring the fact that homosexuality was accepted and encouraged among them...

Losers. :)

(Most off topic post ever)

I was wondering when we'd be able to turn a thread about science into a political discussion, Thank you, Kenny! :-)

Hum,
Sry about the `that` link (i put it  there just to give some info on the phalanx and hoplites)
And the film was `epic`....
All that rippling muscle  and sweaty torsos...

[No one really likes the spartans anyway]

Anyway congratulations to the cassini team... :-)
