I've been looking to get a PDA for work... this means one that can use Excel spread sheets...
My research has thrown up this little chap, the HP iPaq 4150... anyone here have much experience with this device?
-Edit- The race is between this and the Dell Axim X3 :-)
-
I use mine to watch cartoons (simpsons, family guy, home movies, etc etc) great fun to have a total distraction as for work on it....uuhhh I work as little as possible.

Are you recommending the HP4150 then? :-)
I'm also interested in the Asus MyPal A730...

I have a little compaq c-series hpc, its got a full keyboard so it runs word excell powerpoint, IE, msn messenger etc really well. It's only 256 colours so it's no good for videos etc, can handle mp3s, but anything over 128k is overkill.

Yep I love my 4150 the Asus and viewsonic are good too. When it comes to pda's buy the best you can afford you dont want to run into things you want to do but cant.

I personally prefer palm stuff over winCE stuff, but thats just me, heh funily enough they're selling low end palms for about £40 down argos, and can use the word and excel stuff.
Personally though, I'll stick with the mother of all palmtops - my newton 120 :-D
Happy hunting dood

no u want an amstrad notepad pda 600 :)

I want an Atari Portfolio

The Asus MyPal A730 looks amazing in print, with it's VGA screen, but has features I wouldn't pay extra for (camera). I haven't seen one yet so I'll wait to pass judgement.
If you're doing just Word, Excel (and other assorted contact, email, and notetaking) work then get the cheaper ones. The new Dell X30 series looks neat, and is fairly cheap. Maybe wait until there are other VGA models. Using my Tablet PC has me craving higher resolution on the handhelds.
(I have a Dell Axim X5 (for work), Sharp Zaurus (pesonal use, fun to use as a hotspot finder), and an old iPAQ 3670 (backup for work, this thing is a tank... and weighs as much).

Haven't worked with those for over a year (Worked at their support back when they were still called Compaq iPaq :-P), but IIRC, the excel version in PocketPC isn't as functional as the "real thing".

That is a concern! I need to be able to add comments to the cells...
I'll have to visit a shop and try one out...

Sounds like a good idea. The development of the those things has certainly pushed forward the last years.

Has anyone run ScummVM on an HP4150?
Also does the HP4150 just run "Pocket PC 2003
Windows Mobile" programs or can it run other WindowsCE (PocketPC) program if they are compiled for the ARM (is the Xscale fully ARM compatible?)

Yeah nothing beats the Newton got a MP2000 myself, but it stays in my house because I´m afraid of breaking it.( It already survived one 1m drop to the asphalt, no reason to push my luck).
Too bad there is no Newton emulator for Palms or Pocketpcs.
And only MS could screw up the letter-recognizer licensed from ParaGraph, it´s the same as the one used in the Newton.
Luckily it´s available here http://www.phatware.com/index.html (http://www.phatware.com/index.html) in an almost unaltered form. I´m still not used to the pocketpcs stupid way to mark and copy/paste text tough.

I run ScummVM on my HP4150... works great. The interface is well suited to the touch screen. Great stuff.
I think it can run WindowsCE stuff... not too sure though.
-
PocketPCs with Xscale can run programs compiled for winCE on StrongARM( also known on old webbpages as Ipaq-version:-)).
If there isn´t any trouble with CE/ppc libraries, that is.
Got a viewsonic v35 myself it´s basically a mp3-player, the letter recognizer sucked, it´s too slow to play videos, too lowres and smallscreen to display pics and it´s only SD memory cards no SDIO.
So it´s mp3-player and chesscomputer(installed GNUchess) for now. Some day it will maybe also become an ebook.
Even when I installed Calligrapher(new hwr-recognition) I found the OS got in the way of actually writing notes on it.
I hate that "Insert date"-menu that pops-up when holding down the pen. Anybody know a hack to disable it? So I could mark text like one the newton or with a realworld markerpen?

The HP iPAQ 4150 is a work of art!
I recommend it to any one. ScummVM is brilliant, it plays Quake great too! Movies, Mp3's... I can cary pictures, Documents and spreadsheets! The battery lasts all day, the screen is bright and crystal clear!
That is the best £320 (with a 512Meg SDIO memory card) I have spent since my A1200!
I can't wait to get programming the thing!

How do you like the handwriting recognition?

Amazingly It is able to recognise my handwriting better than I can!
I'll scribble down a few notes (when I'm out inspecting)... then pop the unit back into my pocket, by the time I get back to the office, I read the notes and I can't really tell what I have writen (I had this problem with my old pen-&-paper note pad), Click recognise, and it turns it in to type! At worst it missrecognises maybe 3 letters!
