Title: Kickflash OS4/eflash4000
Post by: PaSha on June 28, 2004, 02:29:46 PM
Hi.
Has anyone used any of these two boards?
I just want to know if it gets rid of the extra reboot, and perhaps other nice details about them.

I don't have any though I'm getting one in the mail soon... 'till then I can't confirm it but their sellingpoint is just that the extra reboots should be gone amongst other things such as, at least on the eFlash side, it can initialice USB chain to allow for booting of of USB harddrive.

The next issue of the Amiga Plus magazine should contain a review about the three flashrom solutions available (Algor/Romulus, KickFlash and eFlash4000). Maybe the Total Amiga magazine should also do a comparison.

From what I know (!), USB booting is only possible with the Algor/Highway+Romulus, but not with the Spider PCI cards. Unless Elbox changed their PCI stuff significantly, there's no way initializing the PCI cards before DOS is available, hence no booting via USB. In their first versions of their firmware, Poseidon could not even be flashed at all. I don't know, if this has changed by now. A happy eFlash4000 user to confirm Elbox' PR gags is still to be found in the wild :)

About Elbox stating in their ads here on amiga.org that eFlash4000 would be the "most advanced FlashROM solution"... well, do you believe in commercials or independent reviews and user's personal experience? :) Well, you'll find out soon enough. Don't hesitate to report back.

Well then... I just ordered one, after getting a detailed reply from Jens Schönfeld/Individual Computers.
I'll post a quick review once I receive it. (knowing norwegian customs that could take some time...)
