Title: 40 gig HD
Post by: swift240 on June 22, 2004, 11:50:26 PM
I am at present using a 6.4 gig HD with OS3.9.
I am thinking of buying a 40 gig HD if I do, then what would the smallest and largest partition that I could use on the 40 gig?

What I want to do is to partition the 40 gig and put all from the 6.4 onto a partition and then use that as the main HD.
Formating the 6.4 gig afterwards and using it as Photos/MP3.

I have EIDE99 IDE board no problems there.

As far as I know after installing BB1&2 it's stright forward finding the drive. System partision need to be no larger that 2Gb and be the first partision on the drive but apart from that I belive you can partision the drive more or less as you please.

Hum,
A tip would be to have the main system partition about 500Mb (no more than 1 gig) - this would help to cut down the time of defragmenting the drive, etc...(And would contain the workbench and libs: ,  etc)

On my system i have 10 partitions (spread over 3 HD`s), with at least two bootable partitions - one partition being the emergency boot, and only 10 Mb in size. (This has saved me on many an occasion), and set at a lower boot priority..

Another partition (on different HD to main sys:)  i use as a backup device - just drag and drop...

And of course i have the usual pictures, web, music and programs partitions.

The only thing to remember, is to set the default 30 buffer sizes on each partition to an amount that corresponds to what it'll be used for, (eg 200Kb for my 540Mb SYS: , 20Kb for Storage etc) , as too much `buffer`  eats up the chip memory...(depending on your set-up).

[Hum, well that set-up (http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/blobrana/cont/computer.html) suits me] :-)

Do people still defrag on the Amiga ?
I find it a lot easier and quicker to copy the all the data off a partition, do a quick format and copy it all back again. Then again, you don`t get any pretty display of your HD this way. :-(

OK thanks for the info on that, I have a Mediator with Voodoo 3 card so chip mem will not be a great problem.
