Title: Cyberstorm 060 located and not on ebay anyone want it?
Post by: BIG-IRON on June 22, 2004, 06:04:51 AM
I got an A3000 so I cant use it but I found a guy who has an 060 cyberstorm hes looking to unload. I can get ya in touch with him I dont know what he wants for it but he seems reasonable. Or I could scoop it up and trade it for the cybergraphix video card. leme know what you guys think, Ill give first shot to the moderators like mikeymike but then to whoever is interested.

What makes you think you can't use it in your A3000?

Been told it dont fit, might not be true will it?

The original Cyberstorm 060 (mk1) will not physically fit.
The later mk2 and mk3 will JUST fit.  I have a mkII in mine, but have made a small spacer to lift the drive plate up a few mm, otherwise it touches against the memory SIMMs.

Many people cut a section out of the drive plate for a better fit and to mount a fan for cooling.  The standard A3000D case was not brilliant for air flow.

I don´t know about the Mk2, but Mk3 fits in my A3000 desktop without a problem, so I don´t see why you think it JUST fits.

My Mk2 fits fine also.  No mods to the drive platform (yet).

@Orjan
The mk3 was based around the mk2, used pretty much the same sized PCB, same SIMM sockets, same 3.3V regulator design, etc.
The drive plate physically touches the top of the SIMMs when it's all screwed correctly into place, so it is a tight squeeze.
You can get around the problem by using reduced height SIMMs, but these can be hard to get.
It's not good practice having metalwork so close to the edge of PCBs (like the SIMMs) as if there are tracks close to the edge of the board, there is a risk of the grounded metalwork touching signal lines.

Other considerations are the heat dissipated by the board.  For example the 060 itself has around 4W in heat dissipation (specified in the Motorola datasheet), and you'll notice it uses a linear 3.3V regulator, as opposed to a switchmode one, so the regulator generates another ((5V-3.3V)*(4W/3.3V))=2W of heat at least, which has to go somewhere.  That's not taking into account the additional heat generated by the CPLD devices, which I don't have exact data on, but obviously adds to the problem.

Dave Haynie also stated the A3640 had heat problems in the A3000D, further indicating the lack of cooling in the case.  If you study the airflow pattern around where the CPU board fits, you can see why this is.  In many cases the CPU boards can fit, but there are physical constraints and heat dissipation issues which make it a bit boaderline.  Things are getting very close to manufacturers' recommended operating limits, hence why I think it JUST fits.

Heat-wise I can agree with you, that the 3000D case isn´t the best, but I didn´t have any problems with the physical fit. It was som time since I towered the computer, but as I can recall there was some space between the SIMMs and the drive plate. Perhaps there are different revisions of the board?

I don´t really understand why you guys are creating problems. If the board touches the Simms then just put some pieces of paper between them. If the air flow is not really perfect, then use a 5,25" Twin Cooler to cool the whole case and put your scsi CDrom external !!! I don´t have got an A3000 myself, but what I suggest seems to make sense !!!

@Effy

There is no 5.25" bay in the A3000, making additional cooling a bit of a challenge.  Also the drive platform creates a good seal leaving a pocket of hot air where the CPU fast slot is.  That said, I never had a problem with my 040/35MHz (CPU fan only, no heatsync).

I had a MKiii in an A3000D for over a year until I sold the computer.  While I ran into weird hard drive checksum errors from time to time, I never had a problem with the accel or SIMMs on it per se, despite the cramped space in one of those computers, it all seemed to work fine for me.

One thing you can also do, is buy a 486 heat sink - they are EXACTLY the same size as the 68060 chip on that accel, and you can just either clip or glue it onto the CPU directly, works great and will fit in there, because the SIMMs rise above the horizontal level of the CPU top and there's space in there for it.  I did this on both my A4000T when it had a MKIII, and in my A2000 which has a TekMagic 68060 card in it.  In the tower/A2000, you have more space to clip a fan on there instead of a heat sink...

I don't have CS accellerator but I do have a WarpEngine
040 @40mhz. Before that I had a C=3640 card.
What I did to help the cooling on my A3000d is add a CPU
fan. I bent a small 'L' bracket that allowed the fan to drop
through the big hole behind the floppy drives and direct
the flow of air across the accellerator. I did this for
the A3640 card and never had a heat problem and when I
upgraded to the WarpEngine I left the fan in.
I've use this machine with the accellerators thru 2 hot
summers with NO heat problems.
No hacking the case and it works great.
